ஒரு நாள் நாரை மிகுந்த பசியுடன் இருந்தது, அதற்கான உணவைத் தேடி கூட்டிலிருந்து வெளியே வந்தது. நாரை, மீன் பிடிக்க ஆற்றங்கரைக்கு சென்று மீனுக்காக காத்துக்கொண்டிருந்தது.
நாரை ஆற்றில் நீந்திக் கொண்டிருந்த மீனை பிடித்தது. மீன் சிறியதாக இருந்ததால் தனக்கு போதாது, பெரிய மீனை பிடித்துவிடலாம் என நினைத்து அந்த சிறிய மீனை விட்டுவிட்டது.
மீண்டும் ஒரு சிறிய மீனைக் கண்டது, அந்த சிறிய மீன் தனது வயிற்றை நிரப்பாது என்று நினைத்துக் கொண்டு அதையும் விட்டுவிட்டது. அந்த வழியில் வந்த பல சிறிய மீன்களை விட்டுவிட்டு பெரிய மீன் வரும் வரை காத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தது.
சூரியன் அஸ்தமனம் வரை, நாரைக்கு எந்த பெரிய மீனும் கிடைக்கவில்லை. நாரை மெதுவாக சோர்வடைய ஆரம்பித்தது. கடைசியில் நாரை வெறும் வயிற்றில் இருந்துகொண்டு, அந்த சிறிய மீன்கள் அனைத்தும் சேர்ந்து என் வயிற்றை நிரப்பியிருக்கும், ஆனால் இப்போது மிகவும் தாமதமாகிவிட்டது என்று நினைத்து பசியுடன் இருந்தது.
நீதி : தண்ணீரில் இருக்கும் பெரிய மீனை விட கையில் இருக்கும் சிறிய மீன் பெரு மதிப்புடையது.
The Foolish Crane
One day, a crane felt hungry. So, he came out of his nest to look for food. The crane went to the river to catch fish and was waiting for the fish. He stood by the river and saw enough fish to eat.
He pounced on the fish and caught it. But then, the fish was small, it was not enough and left off the small fish, hoping to catch the big fish.
Then again saw a small fish and he let it go, thinking that the small fish would not fill his belly. This way he caught many small fish, but let all of them go off and waiting for the big fish.
By sunset, the crane had not caught any big fish. He slowly began to feel tired. At the end he remained empty stomach and thought, All those small fish, together would have filled up my belly, but now it was too late. He remained hungry that day.
MORAL : A small fish in hand is worth than a big fish in the water.
