ஒரு கிராமத்தில், ஆடு மேய்க்கும் சிறுவன் ஒருவன் வாழ்ந்து வந்தான். ஒருமுறை அவன் ஆடு மேய்த்து கொண்டிருந்த போது, கிராமவாசிகளுக்கு விளையாட்டு காட்ட நினைத்தான். உடனே “ஓநாய்.. ஓநாய.. ஆடுகளை ஓநாய் துரத்துகிறது!” என கூச்சலிட ஆரம்பித்தான். சிறுவனுக்கு உதவவும் ஆடுகளை காப்பாற்றவும் கிராம மக்கள் ஓடி வந்தனர். அவர்கள் எதையும் அங்கு கணவில்லை, சிறுவன் அவர்களின் கோபமான முகங்களைப் பார்த்து சிரித்தான். சிறுவன் விளையாடிய விளையாட்டை கிராம மக்கள் புரிந்துகொண்டு அவனை விட்டு அங்கிருந்து விலகி சென்றனர்.
சற்று நேரம் கழித்து மீண்டும் கூச்சலிட ஆரம்பித்தான். கிராமவாசிகள் உண்மையாகவே ஓநாய் வந்துவிட்டதோ என நினைத்து சென்றனர். ஆனால் ஓநாய் அங்கு வரவில்லை, கிராமவாசிகள் சிறுவனை மீண்டும் கண்டித்து விட்டு சென்றனர். சிறுவனும் தன்னுடைய வேலையை பார்க்க ஆரம்பித்தான். சற்றும் எதிர்பாராமல் ஓநாய் அங்கு வந்துவிட்டது. சிறுவனும் பயந்து போய் “ஓநாய்! தயவுசெய்து உதவுங்கள்! ஓநாய் ஆடுகளைத் துரத்துகிறது. உதவுங்கள்!” என்று கத்த, இந்த முறை அவனுக்கு உதவ யாரும் வரவில்லை.
அந்தி சாய சிறுவன் வீட்டுக்கு வராததை கண்ட கிராமவாசிகள் அவனைத் தேடி மலைக்குச் சென்றனர். சிறுவன் அங்கு அழுது கொண்டிருப்பதைக் கண்ட கிராமவாசிகள் அவன் அருகே சென்றனர. சிறுவன் கிராமவாசிகளிடம் ஓநாய் வந்தது என்று கத்திய போது ஏன் யாரும் வரவில்லை என்று கோபத்துடன் கேட்டான். “இப்போது பாருங்கள், ஆடுகள் அனைத்தும் இல்லை”, என்று கூறினான்.
ஒரு கிராமவாசி சிறுவனை அணுகி, “மக்கள் உண்மையைச் சொல்லும்போது கூட பொய்யர்களை நம்ப மாட்டார்கள். இப்போது வீட்டிற்கு செல்லலாம”, என்று கூறினார்.
நீதி : பொய் நம்பிக்கையை உடைக்கிறது, பொய் கூறுபவர் உண்மையைச் சொல்லும் போது யாரும் நம்பமாட்டார்கள்.
The boy who cried wolf
Once upon a time, there lived a shepherd boy in a village. While he was watching his flock of sheep in the hill, he thought of playing the villagers. Immediately he shouted, “Wolf! Wolf! The sheep are being chased by the wolf!”. The villagers came running to help the boy and save the sheep. They found nothing and the boy just laughed by looking at their angry faces. The villagers understand the game played by the boy and left him.
After a while he started to shout again. The villagers thinking and left if the wolf had actually arrived. But the wolf did not get there, and the villagers again reprimanded the boy and left. The boy continued watching the work. After a while, he saw a real wolf and cried loudly, “Wolf! Please help! The wolf is chasing the sheep. Help!” But this time, no one turned up to help.
By evening, when the boy didn’t return home, the villagers wondered what happened to him and went up the hill. The boy sat on the hill weeping. “Why didn’t you come when I called out that there was a wolf?”, he asked angrily. The flock is scattered now, he said.
A villager approached him and said, People won’t believe liars even when they tell the truth. Let’s go home now.
Moral: Lying breaks trust. Nobody trusts a liar, even when he is telling the truth.
